BUKU MEWAH TERBAHARU DI LANCARKAN DISEMBER 2012

COLOURS of KOTA MARUDU –

This book presents information on the natural resources of Marudu Bay, particularly at Kota Marudu, which can be utilized by the Sabah State Government to promote this lesser known area as an ecotourism destination. It also highlights the multidisciplinary findings by Universiti Putra Malaysia researchers, including flora, fauna, physical environment, culture and proposed co-management practices for the sustainable management of mangrove resources.

The values of the Marudu Bay mangrove ecosystem go beyond just a mundane listing of its many natural resources. The network of rivers in the mangroves forms an intriguing maze that can make river-cruising an unforgettable experience. A nature package comprising the migratory birds, glittering fireflies, colourful fishes, bivalves, and mangrove fauna and fauna is an ecotourist’s dream. If sustainably developed, ecotourism can become a major economic driver in the area. In addition to its natural attractions, Kota Marudu has unique and interesting cultures and communities. Their home-grown talents such as boat building and knife-making, to mention a few, can be further enhanced to improve the local livelihoods.

However, the development of this quaint little town has to take serious account of the health of the Marudu Bay mangrove ecosystem.  Environmental sensitivity should be emphasized in any comprehensive development plan for Kota Marudu. No mangroves should be disturbed to make way for modern concrete houses and apartments, hotels, and business centres.  It is our hope that the golden heritage of Marudu Bay continues to be intact and functions well in tandem with the economic development of the region for many generations to come.
